State Police reported that I-88 was closed in both directions after a tractor-trailer’s gas tanks caught fire when they were hit by a car, that was avoiding a deer carcass in the roadway. The accident occurred at about 7:45 this morning in the town of Otego between exits 12 and 13 where the eastbound lanes were closed and the westbound lanes are divided to allow traffic in both directions. Troopers reported that in spite of the fire, the unidentified driver was not injured; the driver of the car was treated for minor injuries. State police reported that the Highway has been reopened this afternoon.

Delaware County Deputies arrested 78-year-old Sidney Cunningham of Unadilla for DWI & failure to keep right, following a 1-car accident on Dunshee Road in the Town of Sidney. Cunningham was released on his appearance tickets to the Town of Sidney Court on July 14th.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested 68-year-old Earl Eaton of Greene, Saturday following an accident on Pigeon Hill Road in the Town of Fenton. Deputies responded to the report of a car hitting into a tree, Eaton was transported to an hospital for evaluation, Eaton was charged with DWI, Unreasonable speed, Failure to maintain lane, & driving left of pavement markings, he will answer to the charges in Town of Fenton Court at a later date.

State Senator Jim Seward announced senate passage of the “New York State Terror Registry,” which would require anyone convicted of state or federal crimes of terrorism to register with the Division of Criminal Justice Services, and would make their non-confidential information available to the public. The bill is modeled after Megan’s Law, which established the New York State Sex Offender Registry. The bill has been sent to the assembly.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office & Walton Police executed a search warrant at 8 Benton Avenue, Walton, Thursday, which led to the seizure of Suboxone and marihuana. Deputies arrested 32-year-old Donald Debrock, and 21 year old Nicolette Fischetti for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana, Debrock and Fischetti were arraigned in the Walton Village Court and were remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $75,000 cash bail pending further action in that court.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 42-year-old Frederick Damiano of Masonville, for endangering the Welfare of a Child & criminal mischief, after an investigation of a domestic incident. Damiano was arraigned in Town of Hamden Court & was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $1000 cash bail; he is scheduled to appear at the Town of Masonville Court at a later date.

The State DOT announced that construction work for the Prospect Mountain construction project will be performed and will require a long-term lane closure on the State Route 17 east ramp to Interstate 81 north in the City of Binghamton. Starting at 9:00 AM today, the ramp to I-81 will be reduced to 1 lane to install pavement markings associated with the new long-term traffic pattern, to construct a new pier for the future I-81 north/State Route 17 west Flyover Bridge. Motorists are advised to be alert for slow moving traffic and sudden stops.

State Police arrested 30-year-old Kurtis Breed of Oneonta, for 2nd degree Reckless Endangerment, following the report of an incident in the parking lot of the Price Chopper on State Route 7 in the Town of Oneonta on June 5th. Breed allegedly drove his vehicle recklessly at another motorist and veered at the last second and then drove away, he was arraigned in the Town of Oneonta court and was released without bail required. An order of protection was issued, pending future court action.

State Police arrested 48-year-old Chauncey Couse of Davenport for criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal possession of a weapon 4th degree and other traffic violations. The arrest occurred after a traffic stop for Couse talking on his cell phone while driving on Main Street in the Town of Oneonta, police accused Couse of possessing 12 grams of heroin and a Billy club in his vehicle, he faces court action returnable to the town of Oneonta on June 29th.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Department arrested a City of Norwich resident on an active arrest warrant for Criminal Mischief. 50-year-old Brian Doeberl was charged following an investigation into allegations that he intentionally damaged county property while being incarcerated in the Chenango County Correctional Facility. Doeberl was arraigned in the Town of Norwich court and released on his own recognizance; he will reappear in the Town of Norwich Court at a later date.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Department arrested 47-year-old Gina Criscitello of Binghamton for DWI, Driving while ability impaired by Drugs among other charges, in the Town of Chenango Thursday night. Criscitello was transported to the Broome County Sheriff’s Office for further evaluation by a Drug Recognition Expert. Criscitello was released she will be arraigned in the Town of Chenango Court at a later date.

The State Public Service Commission adopted a 3-year electric and gas rate plans for NYSEG & Rochester Gas and Electric Corporation. Effective July 1 of this year through April 30, 2019, typical residential electric customers in NYSEG’s service territory will see a monthly delivery charge increase of approximately $2.20 in the first year with increases of $1.76 and $1.79, respectively, in the second and third years. Under the company’s proposal, in rate year one, typical residential customers would have experienced an increase in delivery charges of $8.79 per month. Typical residential gas customers in NYSEG’s service territory will see a monthly delivery charge increase of approximately $1.35, $4.01, and $4.21 in rate year one, two and three, respectively.

The statewide unemployment rate decreased from 4.9% to 4.7% in May 2016. This represented the state’s lowest unemployment rate since August 2007. New York’s unemployment rate was equal to the U.S. rate in May 2016. In addition, the number of unemployed New Yorkers also decreased over the month – falling from 476,600 in April to 461,800 in May 2016, reaching its lowest level since October 2007. New York State’s private sector job count declined by 19,600, or 0.2%, in May 2016. About half of the state’s private sector job losses in May were temporary, due to a strike in the telecommunications industry. Since the beginning of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s administration, New York State’s economy has added 794,700 private sector jobs and experienced employment growth in 56 of the past 65 months.

Sidney Central School will hold their Summer Food Service Program this summer, to ensure that children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. Governor Cuomo announced the launch of coordinated sweeps during the summer concert season and at other underage hotspots as part of ongoing efforts to deter underage drinking and prevent the use of fake IDs. The enforcement sweeps will occur unannounced at various concert venues and will be carried out by the DMV, the State Liquor Authority, State Park Police, State Police, and local law enforcement agencies. Patrons under the age of 21 found to be using fake IDs or false documents with the intent of purchasing alcohol can be arrested and have their license revoked for a minimum of 90 days or up to one year.


The State Lawmakers are wrapping up their work for the 2016 session, this year’s Budget contains highway funding going to individual municipalities this year through “Pave NY”, for them to take care of various road repairs after the winter months. Area Assemblyman Bill Magee explains:

State Police arrested 24 year old Jesse Adams of Maryland, New York for 3 counts of 3rd Degree Assault 3rd degree, after troopers were advised of a series of physical assaults at a home on Dog Hill Road in the Town of Maryland. Adams is accused of assaulting his Girlfriend 3 times the last 8 months causing injuries. Adams was arraigned in Town of Milford court and was released without bail required; an order of protection was placed against Adams.

State Police announced the recovery of the body of 9-year-old Dylan Giangregorio Tuesday. Police said that the boy was presumed to have drowned when he and six family members were swept over a waterfall at Letchworth State Park, the body of his 6-year-old brother Preston was recovered Sunday. 5 other family members were rescued & were taken to area hospitals, State Police reported that the family of 7 left a designated trail and entered the water above the falls illegally.

The State Tax Department reminds quarterly and monthly sales tax vendors to avoid penalties and interest by filing their returns on or before Monday, June 20th. New York State has more than 536,000 sales tax filers, including about 227,000 quarterly filers and 49,000 monthly filers. The Delaware county sheriffs department responded to a 3-car personal injury accident in Stamford yesterday. 23-year-old Kevin Matthew of New City crossed the double yellow line on State Route 23, striking a vehicle operated by 37-year-old William Eklund of Stamford. The force of the collision forced Eklund’s vehicle to hit a parked car, which was occupied by 62-year-old Margaret Smith of Otego. All involved were taken to Fox Hospital in Oneonta for treatment, Mathew was ticketed for failure to keep right, speed not reasonable & Prudent, he will face court action on June 27th.

State Police responded to the report Sunday night of a man who jumped off of a highway overpass onto Interstate 88 in Oneonta, in an apparent suicide attempt. The victim was airlifted to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City with a variety of injuries; the victims name & address are not being released.

Governor Cuomo & state leaders announced an agreement on legislation to improve rail safety measures across New York State. The agreement includes a series of initiatives that will reduce the risk of train-motor vehicle collisions at grade crossings across the State. The new initiatives will require coordinated, frequent inspections of traffic control devices at highway-rail crossings and impose penalties on railroad companies and repeat offender drivers who continue to disobey the law and ignore important safety requirements.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 27-year-old Aaron Cleveland of New Berlin for 2nd degree Criminal Contempt. An office was sent to a Village of New Berlin residence to investigate a separate crime, The deputy discovered that Cleveland was the subject of a temporary order of protection from Town of New Berlin Court, Cleveland was arraigned & was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $500 cash bail pending future court action.

Delaware County Deputies investigated a one-car personal injury rollover auto accident Thursday in the Town of Davenport. 43-year-old William Wehrenberg of Davenport lost control of his vehicle on a corner on Parks Hill Road, he went off the road into an embankment causing the vehicle to overturn when reentering the roadway. Wehrenberg was issued traffic tickets for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Uninspected Motor Vehicle, Suspended Vehicle Registration, Operating without Insurance in Effect, Failure to Keep Right and Speed Not Reasonable and Prudent. All tickets are returnable to the Town of Davenport Court on June 28th. Wehrenburg & a passenger were taken to Fox Hospital in Oneonta.

The Oneonta Fire Department responded to a cooking fire Thursday night in an apartment at 7 Raymond Avenue. The fire was extinguished quickly; substantial damage to the Kitchen area was reported. The unidentified male occupant of the apartment was taken to Fox Hospital.

The search effort continues today at Letchworth State Park for a child who fell over the lower falls. 7 people reportedly fell about 60 feet over the falls, search teams found the deceased body of another young boy from that group Sunday. 2 Men & 3 young girls were rescued & taken to a Rochester area Hospital. Investigators discovered that the group were playing in the water Saturday night and one person slipped, causing a ripple effect which sent all of them plunging over the falls.

Broome County Sheriff’s Department stated that the body of 61-year-old Arthur Gehr of the Town of Union was found by searchers in the area of Zion Hill Road and Route 8 near Steam Mill State Forest in Masonville. Gehr suffered from medical issues and depression, he last spoke to his employer on June 5th and was reported missing June 7th. Authorities say there were no signs of foul play, the cause of death has not been released, & the investigation is considered closed.

State Police arrested 55 year old Cal Harris of Spencer, for 4th degree stalking. The arrest occurred after an investigation determined Harris had verbally threatened an off duty New York State Police member and his family while standing in front of the member’s residence in the Town of Oneonta. Harris was located and arrested shortly after leaving the member’s residence. Harris was arraigned in Town of Oneonta court & was released on his own recognizance pending further court proceedings. At arraignment, an Order of Protection directing Harris to refrain from having any contact with the victim or his family, & Harris was ordered to surrender all firearms in his possession. Harris was recently aquitted at his 4th murder trial, which was held in Schoharie County Court, he was convicted twice before for killing his wife Michelle in 2001.

Governor Cuomo announced the final report and recommendations from the Heroin and Opioids Task Force’s plan to combat the state’s crisis. among the 25 recommendation: Remove insurance barriers to inpatient treatment by eliminating prior approval for admission, Mandate that insurers use an objective, state-approved criteria when making coverage determinations for treatment, Increase the number of treatment beds and program slots for substance abuse disorder, Mandate prescribers to complete ongoing education on pain management, palliative care, and addiction, Limit opiate prescriptions for acute pain from 30-days to no more than a 7-day supply, with certain exceptions & Mandate that pharmacists educate consumers on the risks associated with prescription opioids.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a lead that was called in Thursday of a suspicious vehicle parked on Zion Hill Road near the Steam Mill State Forest in Masonville. Arthur Gehr’s Chevy Silverado pick-up truck was located parked on the side of the roadway locked. Gehr was not located anywhere near or around the vehicle. State Police & Deposit Police were called in to assist, State Police are conducting the current investigation & search effort in Delaware County. Gehr is 61 years of age and was last seen on Saturday June 4th at his residence on Barton Ave in the Town of Union. He last spoke with his employer on Sunday afternoon. He suffers from depression and has medical conditions & he may be in the Deposit area. The SFCU Hometown Parade will be held tomorrow through the village of Sidney. SFCU Spokesperson Elise Glassett told WCDO of the parade route:

The 8th Otsego Lakes Festival will be held on Saturday, June 11 from noon to 5 p.m. at Lakefront Park in Cooperstown. Activities for kids will include the Cooperstown Art Association’s fish painting station, interactive science displays with SUNY Oneonta’s Biological Field Station, and a “juried” art contest. Refreshments will be for sale on site.

The State DOT announced that construction work for the Prospect Mountain construction project would require lane closures in Binghamton today 9:00 AM to 12:oo Noon. Traffic will be reduced to one lane for concrete median barrier removal at State Route 17 eastbound between Exit 70 & 72, & State Route 17 westbound between Exit 72 & 71. Motorists are advised to be alert for slow moving traffic and sudden stops.

On Saturday, from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm, Chenango County Airport Day will be held at the Eaton Airport in Norwich. The day starts with a Fly-In breakfast starting at 8:00 am. The Buffalo Heritage Squadron will be bringing the SNJ-4, a World War II era trainer jet. The EAA will also be providing free rides to children ages 8 to 17 as part of the Young Eagles program.

Overdose deaths related to heroin and prescription opioid abuse reached record highs in New York State in 2014, according to a report issued today by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. DiNapoli’s report noted heroin overdose deaths reached a record high of 825 in 2014, a jump of 159 deaths, or 24% over 2013, and is nearly 25 times the number recorded in New York 10 years earlier. Only Massachusetts had more heroin overdose deaths, & only Connecticut had more prescription opioid deaths than New York.

Attorney general Eric Schneiderman is asking Charter Communications to fix the service problems of the state’s Time Warner Cable subscribers following their recent acquisition.   Schneiderman reported that his office’s investigation has shown Time Warner’s actual internet speeds can be lower than advertised and that they failed to keep up with customer demand, leading to congestion and lost data. Officials with Charter stated that they have made significant investments in its infrastructure already and will continue to do so.

State Police arrested 53-year-old Deborah Perkins of Oneonta, for operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs and unlawful possession of marihuana. The arrest occurred after a trooper responded to a report of a motor vehicle driving off the roadway on State Route 28 in the Town of Otsego.   Perkins is accused of driving while impaired by drugs when she crashed; Perkins faces court action on June 16th.

The 10 day Greater Chenango Cares IRT event will be held on 10 days in July In Norwich again this year, with a variety of medical, dental, optometry and veterinary services. Volunteers are needed to sign up & assist with the event, according to Elizabeth Monaco of the Chenango United Way:

This funding from the Governor’s Aviation Capital Grant Program will support safety, infrastructure, and economic development projects across the State. The Ottawa Senators announced today that Kurt Kleinendorst has been returned as head coach of the Binghamton Senators. Kleinendorst returns to Binghamton where he delivered the franchise’s only Calder Cup championship in 2011. In two years with the B-Sens, Kleinendorst posted a 71-70-8-7 regular season record and went 16-7 during the championship 2011 post-season. Assistant coach Steve Stirling has also agreed to return to the B-Sens coaching staff.
