A Delaware county man was killed in an accident Sunday, when a deer hit by one vehicle on state route 30, ricocheted into another car. 49 year old John Peters of Roxbury was a passenger in a vehicle driven by 35 year old Renee Wojciechowski, Investigators reported that the deer was first hit by a vehicle driven by 58 year old Susan Greene of Denver New York, it then bounced off the Greene vehicle, and hit Peters, who died a few hours later at Albany Medical Center from injuries sustained in the accident. Wojciechowski & 2 other passengers were injured by broken glass, Greene & her 2 passengers were not injured.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman today announced that his office has filed a lawsuit against a Binghamton-area woman for allegedly pocketing a portion of proceeds raised via a GoFundMe.com charitable campaign. Meghan Terry, of Endicott, NY, began a GoFundMe fundraising campaign last year to raise money for a scholarship fund established in the name of Collin Murray, a Binghamton area resident who tragically died in 2015 while attending SUNY Brockport. The lawsuit alleges that Ms. Terry raised almost $2,600, after expenses, but only turned over $1,330 for the scholarship fund.

Broome County public health officials are announcing the county’s first confirmed case of Zika virus. The CDC reports that the symptoms of Zika virus are fever, rash, joint pain and red eyes, it has been linked with serious birth defects in babies of mothers who were infected with the virus while pregnant. Officials said that the mosquito itself has not been found in Broome County, the disease tends to be contracted by those who have traveled to areas where the type of mosquito exists.

A Town of Plymouth resident was arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for Grand Larceny. Deputies arrested 18-year-old Korey Crandall of Plymouth, after an investigation where Crandall allegedly stole a John Deere riding lawn mower from a Village of Smyrna resident. Crandall was arraigned in the Village of Smyrna Court and remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $10,000 cash bail.

State Police arrested 32 year old Jeremy Litchko of Kirkwood for Public Lewdness and Disorderly Conduct, following a complaint of the suspect acting disorderly on County Route 35 in the Town of Guilford. Litchko was arraigned at the Town of Guilford Court and remanded to the Chenango County Jail on bail.


Delaware County Sheriff Deputies responded to County Highway 47 in the Town of Tompkins for a report of a hit and run accident, where a telephone and electric utility pole had been struck & was obstructing traffic. Deputies located the involved vehicle and then vehicle’s impaired driver, 30 year old Adam Buteau of Deposit, walking 3 miles from the scene. Investigators accuse Buteau of driving the flatbed off the roadway, severing the utility pole & fleeing the scene. Buteau was charged DWI, failure to keep right and leaving the scene of a property damage automobile accident; he was arraigned in Town of Sidney Court and was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $1500 cash bail pending further court action.

Amanda Hellman of Vestal was sentenced in Broome County Court to 10 years in state prison for her role in the kidnapping of Shaleen and Kylea Fortner in April of 2015, from their foster home. Both girls were found at Hellman’s residence in Vestal, their biological mother Cindy Fortner is accused of assisting Hellman with the kidnapping, she pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges & faces sentencing shortly.

Governor Cuomo today announced that $13.1 million has been awarded for 42 agricultural water quality conservation projects across the state, benefiting over 120 farms. The funding is provided to 25 County Soil and Water Conservation Districts through the Agricultural Nonpoint Source Abatement and Control Program, it supports projects that allow farmers to address water quality challenges in priority watersheds. 19th congressional district democratic party candidate Zephyr Teachout reported that in the second quarterly fundraising period that runs from April 1-June 30th, she received 69,704 contributions from 43,037 donors, at an average of $15.91, raising a total of $1,109,121.55 in that quarter. Norwich Police arrested 36 year old Gregory Huzinec of Norwich for 1st degree robbery, 2nd degree kidnapping, 1st degree burglary, & 2nd degree assault, for allegedly breaking into a Norwich residence on July 7th, forcibly stealing property, displaying a weapon, attacking a person, and causing injuries to a person. He was arraigned in the Norwich City Court & was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 Bond pending future court action today. Additional charges are pending.

Jury selection for the Almond Upton Trial began today In Broome County Court. Upton is accused of purposely running down Trooper Christopher Skinner on I-81 in the town of Chenango, while the Trooper was conducting an unrelated traffic stop. The trial is expected to take about 4 weeks. Upton is being tried for 1st degree Murder for the May 29th, 2014 incident.

Governor Cuomo’s “Get Screened, No Excuses” motorcycle ride went across the State this weekend, with hundreds of participants, in support of recent legislation to help combat breast cancer in New York. The new legislation requires Hospitals and Clinics to stay open an additional 4 hours a week after 5:00 PM. Reed is accused of engaging in sexual contact with a child less than 15 years old. State Police announced a “Missing Vulnerable Adult Alert” in the Southern Tier, for 78-year-old William Caloroso of Nichols, who is missing since Sunday. Caloroso is described as a white Male, 5’10″, about 160 pounds with Brown Hair & eyes, he suffers from Alzheimer’s disease and may be in need of medical attention. He was last seen on River Road in Nichols, at 8:30 PM last night, driving a 2010 dark blue Chevrolet Impala with New York license plate GDY-8262. He was wearing a flannel shirt, blue pants, and may be wearing a baseball hat that says Sidney on top. Anyone with information is asked to call State police at 561-7400 or at 911.

Hancock Fire and EMS responded to a report of flash flooding in the area of 5256 County Highway 28 Town of Hancock Saturday Night. A wedding with 130 people was in danger and subjects were advised to seek higher ground. The road covered in 1 to 1 ½ feet of rapidly moving water and impassible, swift water rescue resources by the Delaware County Emergency Services and the Deposit, Walton, and Sidney Swift Water Rescue Teams and boats, State Police responded. The water started to drop allowing responding personnel to gain access to the area of the wedding party. All 130 plus individuals were accounted for and safe on higher ground, they were assisted onto awaiting coach buses that had been provided for the wedding and driven to a safe location. Delaware County DPW cleared and reopened County Highway 28 shortly after. The bridge and lower part of Shea Road however were determined to be unsafe with extensive washouts noted. This area was closed off to travel.

Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a vacant property on Williams Road in the Town of Windsor for a report of suspicious vehicles and people on the property. Upon arrival, a deputy observed several vehicles attempting to leave, While attempting to approach a vehicle to identify and speak with it’s occupants, a 2nd vehicle driven by 17 year old Levi Wormuth of Hancock attempted to drive around the deputy, his flashlight and hand got caught in an open side window of the vehicle and he was dragged a short distance before freeing himself. Wormuth continued to drive away from the scene even after being ordered to stop; another Deputy stopped him. Wormuth was charged with Obstructing Governmental Administration, Reckless Endangerment, Operating in violation of restrictions of a junior license, he was issued an appearance ticket for Windsor court at a later date.

Delaware County Sheriff Deputies arrested 58-year-old Louis Brigandi Jr of Walton Wednesday, on charges of criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a controlled substance, and unlawful possession of marijuana following a report of a suspicious fire on Wilderness Mountain Drive in the Town of Hamden. Deputies say Brigandi knowingly possessed a number of prescription pills without a prescription, possessed a quantity of marijuana, and possessed two firearms while having a status as a convicted felon. Brigandi was arraigned in Hamden Town Court and was remanded to the Delaware County Jail in lieu of $1,500 bail.

Binghamton Police arrested 34-year-old Nelson Romero of Binghamton for 2nd degree murder in connection with the death of 44 year Walter Slater of Binghamton. Slater’s body was found in the backyard at 2014 Oak Street in Binghamton last Thursday morning, several blocks from his home. Romero was arraigned & was remanded to the Broome County Jail.

Empire State Development Corporation could not verify that many of the companies participating in the Excelsior Jobs Program met their obligations or even justify giving the businesses tax breaks in the first place, according to an audit by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Auditors found a range of problems from lowering job creation goals after companies did not meet expectations to not verifying if jobs were full-time or part-time. ESD also could not produce evidence that several companies actually created jobs and did not simply shift jobs. ESD officials disagreed with the audit’s findings. 21-year-old Pate Balde of the Bronx was arrested in the Town of Davenport Tuesday morning and charged with possessing narcotic drugs with intent to sell following a collaborative investigation by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, Oneonta City Police Department and State Police. Balde was arrested at the Rock Inn Motel on State Highway 23, Oneonta, and charged with 2 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Unlawful Possession a Marihuana. A search of the motel room, led to the seizure of 65 bags of heroin, 17 individual “wraps” of crack cocaine, powder cocaine, a small quantity of marihuana and more than $1000 cash. Balde was arraigned & he was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility in lieu of $150,000 cash bail pending further court proceedings.

Oneonta Fire Department responded to a fire on Monday at 130 Chestnut Street shortly after 2:00 AM. The fire displaced 4 people, all escaped the blaze, but 2 occupants suffered smoke inhalation. The investigation into the cause of the fire is continuing.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office investigated a single motorcycle fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred Sunday afternoon on County Road 10A, in the Town of Preston. 38-year-old Steven Carpenter of Guilford, lost control and slid into a guide rail. The passenger on the motorcycle was 30-year-old Katelynn Coville of Guilford, Both died at the scene. The Cause of the crash is still under investigation.

The Delaware County DPW will be closing County Route 4 in the Town of Sidney to through traffic today, starting at 7:00 AM, for the replacement of a culvert. Governor Cuomo announced the availability of $200 million in enhanced assistance for local governments over the next two years to rehabilitate and replace bridges and culverts statewide. This funding, provided through the Governor’s BRIDGE NY initiative, is being administered by the New York State Department of Transportation as part of its $21.1 billion five-year Capital Plan. Applications for BRIDGE NY funding will be accepted through September 9th at dot.ny.gov/bridgeny.

Governor Cuomo’s START-UP New York program is under fire, following the release of a report that claims that New York State has spent over 50 million dollars to advertise the program, that has only created 408 new jobs in the past two years. The program calls for incentives such as a ten-year tax-free location to the state by existing or new businesses, the program started slowly in its first year, last year is created 334 jobs. Empire State Development officials released a report Friday, they expect the program to create more than 4,100 new jobs by the end of 2020.

Oneonta Police announced that a threat of terrorist activities in Oneonta by ISIS, from a man in Georgia, was not credible. Police said that that state & federal law enforcement investigators contacted Matthias Czako of Cumming Georgia, who claimed on various social media, that Isis was attack Oneonta during the July 4th Fireworks display following a baseball Game with the Oneonta Outlaws. Oneonta Police reported no issues at the July 4th Celebration; Czako retracted his announcement based on cracking various biblical codes, following the FBI investigation.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office investigated a 2 car fatal motor vehicle crash on County Road 29 in the Town of New Berlin. Vehicle 1 was operated by 19-year-old Matthew Collins of Plymouth, when it crossed the center line into the path of vehicle 2 being operated by 65 year old John Mckernan of New Berlin, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Collins was not injured; he was charged with Failure to Keep Right and will appear in court at a later date.

The State DOT announced that construction work for the Prospect Mountain construction project would require lane closures in the City of Binghamton. Today Front Street southbound will be reduced to 1 lane for the construction of new bridge piers adjacent to Front Street, also State Route 17 will be reduced to 1 lane between Exits 72 & 71 for overhead sign work & the installment of pavement markings associated with a new, temporary traffic pattern change, which is needed to enable the replacement of the Route 17 West Bridge over Glenwood Road.

46-year-old Cindy Fortner pleaded guilty to 2 counts of 4th degree conspiracy, in connection to the kidnapping of her teen daughters. Shaeleen and Kylea Fortner were abducted in April 2015 while they were living with foster parents, they were found at the home of Amanda Hellman of Vestal, who has already pleaded guilty to kidnapping charges. Cindy Fortner will be sentenced on September 20th.

State Police arrested 56-year-old Karolyn White of Norwich, for Felony Aggravated DWI, with a BAC result of .24%, 3 times the legal limit. White was arrested following the report of a vehicle driving erratically in the Town of Oneonta. White was arraigned and remanded to the Otsego County Jail in lieu of bail.

Binghamton Police are investigating a possible homicide, after the body of a man was found outside of 204 Oak Street Thursday morning. A ‘suspicious death’ in the city of Binghamton is now being investigated as a homicide. Today, Binghamton Police identified the victim as 44-year-old Walter Slater of Binghamton, anyone with information is asked to contact Binghamton Police detectives at 722-7080. Tipsters may remain anonymous.

Sidney Village Officials & architects held a forum & open house for the community at the SIdney Library last night, to get input on preliminary plans to turn Main Street into a “Green Street” with an underground reservoir, new sidewalks, trees and increased lighting. Mayor Andy Matviak said that this project goes forward first, because the funding is available first:

Governor Cuomo today announced that lane closures for road and bridge construction projects on New York State highways will be suspended from 6 a.m. on Friday, July 1, to 6 a.m. on Tuesday, July 5, in order to accommodate travelers during the busy Independence Day holiday weekend. Some work may continue behind permanent concrete barriers or for emergency repairs.
