Vulto Creamery of Walton has been named in a wrongful death lawsuit by the widow of Richard Friedman of Vermont, Veronica Friedman. Mr. Friedman died November 2nd 2016 after suffering a massive stroke caused by the Listeriosis infection he suffered from eating the raw milk cheese manufactured by the Vulto Creamery, which was contaminated with Listeria. The Friedman’s purchased Vulto cheese last October and Friedman’s symptoms caused him to go to the Emergency Room at Brattleboro Hospital on October 11th; he was later transferred & suffered a stroke and died at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hospital. 6 other people were hospitalized and 1 other person died in connection with the Vulto Creamery Listeria.

Governor Cuomo signed the Clean Water Infrastructure Act Wednesday; it is a $2.5 billion investment in drinking water infrastructure, clean water infrastructure and water quality protection across the state.

The bill became necessary following the Flint Michigan contaminated water issue, an investigation turned up issues with water in Hoosick Falls & on Long Island.

The State University of New York Board of Trustees today announced the appointment of Kristina Johnson as the 13th chancellor of SUNY, replacing Nancy Zimpher, who will step down as Chancellor in June. Johnson’s appointment is effective September 5 at an annual state salary of $560,000.

The Sidney Village Police Department announced that they would be participating in the National Drug Take Back event this Saturday. Sidney Police Chief Jan Gorshack comments:

The New York State Senate has voted to impose an 8-year term limit in Legislative leadership positions. The legislation calls for no more than 8 years for anyone to serve as State Senate Leader or Assembly Majority leader, they Senate has adopted their own in-house policy to limits leadership terms to 8 years, regardless of the outcome of the legislation. The proposal came forward after years of top-level corruption by leaders of both houses of state government.

Today, Law Enforcement Officers around the state will participate in Operation Safe Stop Day. During “Safe Stop,” police officers are on board school buses and in marked and unmarked patrol units on selected bus routes that have a history of illegal passing complaints. Police issue tickets to drivers who pass stopped school buses. In the last four years, 35 students were hit by motorists passing stopped school buses in New York State.

Delaware County Sheriff Deputies responded Tuesday to a report of a 2-car accident in the parking lot of the Dutch Deli in Meridale. Deputies and State Troopers were advised that the operator of 1 of the involved vehicles was intoxicated and had fled the scene in his vehicle. Deputies observed the vehicle that fled the scene, had driven past their location, they stopped 49 year old Andrew Bright of Meridale, he was charged with DWI, Aggravated DWI with a Blood Alcohol Content Greater Than .18%, leaving the scene of a property damage accident and backing unsafely. Bright was arraigned in the Town of Delhi Court and was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $500 cash bail pending future court action. The occupant of the struck vehicle was 19-year-old Kyle Oborn of Malta, who was not injured, and was not ticketed.

Walton Police arrested 3 Walton residents Saturday on various drug charges, following a 6-month investigation. Arrested were 44-year-old Sueann Maler, 34-year-old James Laughman & 32-year-old Jessica Bolster, for criminal sale of a controlled substance. The investigation was wrapped up with sealed indictments being handed down by a Delaware County Grand Jury last week, all 3 were sent to Delaware County jail pending future court action.

A new Sienna research Institute poll shows that 37% of those polled feel that the new state budget is fair, 23% viewed the budget poorly & 25% viewed it positively. Specific items in the budget polled more favorably, including free college tuition for families with an income up to $125,000, increased aid to school districts, ride sharing & a 2.5 billion dollar clean water infrastructure fund. 51% of those polled said that they would vote for Governor Cuomo for a 3rd term, up slightly from last month.

Binghamton Police charged 36-year-old Jennifer Grenchus of Vestal with Vehicular Manslaughter, for allegedly driving while impaired by drugs when she hit and killed 47-year-old Ronald Richardson of Binghamton with her car Monday afternoon. Binghamton Police responded to the parking lot of Tom’s Cards and Gifts on Main Street where they found Grenchus and her vehicle, with Richardson pinned underneath. Police, Firefighters & civilians flipped the Grenchus vehicle off of Richardson, who died at the scene before EMT’s could respond. Grenchus struck Richardson along Main Street; dragging his body underneath her vehicle before turning into Tom’s parking lot. Grenchus was arraigned in City Court where she was remanded to the custody of the Broome County Jail. The investigation into incident is continuing, anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Binghamton Police at 772-7080.

The state Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs office announced the arrest of 29-year-old Michael Scott of Binghamton for endangering a person with special needs in his care. Scott is accused of pushing the victim to the ground, and kicking the victim several times in February at the HCA’s Kirkwood facility. Scott was placed on administrative leave, & was arraigned in Kirkwood Town Court and was released on his own recognizance.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies located and arrested 29-year-old Richard Lane of Delhi on an Arrest Warrant from the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office. Lane was turned over to Chenango county officials and was arraigned on the warrant charging him with Aggravated Harassment. He was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility in lieu of $5,000 cash bail.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 43 year old Troya Cunningham of Walton on charges of unlicensed operator, aggravated unlicensed operation, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended registration, and endangering the welfare of a child; following a civilian report of a 13 year old child operating a motor vehicle on a public roadway. Cunningham was later released on tickets returnable to Walton Village Court at a later date.

The State Labor Department today released the Unemployment statistics for the month of March. Statewide, the rate dropped one tenth to 4.3%, locally, Chenango County had 5.6% unemployment, Delaware County had 5.7% & Otsego County had 5.1% for March.

Governor Cuomo today launched Round 7 of the Regional Economic Development Council initiative, officially kicking off the annual competition for more than $800 million in state economic development resources. State Police, United States Postal Inspection Service, Binghamton University Police, Binghamton Police, and the Broome County SIU Task Force arrested 21 year old Bryan Shin of Binghamton, for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, after Shin was found to be in possession of approximately 1000 pills and powder containing methamphetamine and fentanyl, a digital scale and packaging material. The street value of the recovered drugs was estimated to be approximately $10,000. Shin was arraigned in the City of Binghamton Court and remanded to the Broome County Jail without bail.

Governor Cuomo announced a new week-long campaign to raise awareness of New York’s Move Over Law, which requires motorists to drive with care, slow down, and safely move over when approaching law enforcement vehicles, fire trucks, ambulances, tow trucks, construction and maintenance vehicles that are stopped along roads across the state. Fire destroyed the Cooperstown Bat Company facility at Poplar Road in the town of Hartwick yesterday. Several area fire companies responded to the blaze, which was reported in the late afternoon hours. The cause of the fire is under investigation, the building is a total loss.

Chobani filed a lawsuit Monday against right-wing radio host Alex Jones, for publishing false information about the company. Chobani accuses Jones and his InfoWars website of posting fabricated stories that linked Chobani owner Hamdi Ulukaya and the company to a sexual assault case involving refugee children. The company filed the lawsuit in Idaho District Court in Twin Falls, where it operates the largest yogurt plant in the world. The video claimed the Chobani plant brought crime and tuberculosis to Idaho since it opened their 5 years ago.

33-year-old Heather Franklin of Guilford has posted bail & has been released from the custody of the Chenango County Correctional facility. Franklin was released on Saturday, her husband Ernest remains in the County jail, both are accused of murder, arson and tampering with physical evidence, following a fire at their town of Guilford residence, where their adopted son Jeffrey was allegedly murdered & a fire was set to cover up the murder on March 1st.

The Broome County Sheriff’s arrested 2 people wanted on warrant by the town of Afton, while investigating a suspicious vehicle parked in a parking lot in Chenango Bridge Friday. 32-year-old Zachariah Burns is accused of possessing cocaine, and giving officers the name and date of birth of another person. Burns’ was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Impersonation, he was also wanted on a Bench Warrant for Failure to Appear in Town of Afton Court. Another passenger was 19-year-old Salena Palmatier also is also accused of giving officers the wrong identity, she was charged with Criminal Impersonation, & was also wanted on a Bench Warrant for Failure to Appear in Town of Afton Court.

Former Broome County Executive Debbie Preston appeared in Binghamton City Court this morning, she pleaded guilty to 1 count of Official Misconduct, she was originally charged with 3 counts. Preston will pay a $1,000 fine. Preston was charged for using a Town of Conklin Credit card for her own purposes when she was a town supervisor between 2005 & 2012.

The State Tax Department has launched Quick Pay, which is a free service that provides individuals a new way to pay a tax bill or debt owed from an audit or collection case. Taxpayers made nearly 2,620 payments worth $2.5 million in the first 4 weeks after Quick Pay was launched on March 24th. The Quick Pay app provides individuals the option to pay directly from their bank account, which can be followed by an emailed confirmation of payment. Taxpayers can access the new app anytime at theTax Department’s webpage.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Investigators arrested 30-year-old Scott Hanrahan of Deposit On Thursday on a Sealed Indictment Arrest Warrant after a Delaware County Grand Jury handed down an Indictment for 3 counts Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance. Hanrahan is accused of selling heroin from his Hale Eddy residence, Investigators obtained and executed a search warrant on February 10th and seized approximately 8 grams of bulk heroin, scales, packaging materials, a shotgun, prescription narcotics, marihuana, a kung-fu throwing star and several hundred dollars in cash. Hanrahan was arraigned and was ordered held without bail on the new charges pending further court action.

State Police are investigating a Fatal Motor vehicle Collision on I-88 in the Town of Maryland, early Saturday morning. A vehicle exited the roadway, entered the center median, rolled over several times, ejecting 19 year old Douglas Alvarez of Mamaroneck, and coming to rest in the westbound lane of travel, it was then struck by another vehicle. Alvarez was transported to Albany Medical Center and later succumbed to his injures. 5 other occupants were transported to Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown with non-life threatening injuries. All 6 occupants are SUNY Cobleskill College students. The operator of the second, uninvolved vehicle was not injured. Alcohol was not a contributing factor to the accident. The investigation is ongoing.

State Police arrested 27 year old Jayson Vanvalkenburg of Mount Upton for Criminal Obstruction of Breathing, Menacing and 2 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Troopers responded to a dispute in the Town of Guilford, Vanvalkenburg allegedly choked the victim in front of 2 children, he was arraigned in the Town of Guilford Court and was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $2000 cash bail, pending court action on April 25th.

State Police arrested 36 year old Justin Shaul of Cooperstown, for DWI with a B.A.C. result of .16% along with other traffic violations. Troopers responded to a report of a vehicle off the roadway on East Street in the Town of Oneonta, Shaul was still with the vehicle. State Police at Norwich arrested 56-year-old Thomas Brick of Chenango Forks, for the felony Grand Larceny and Petty Larceny. The investigation determined that in March 2016, Brick had entered into an agreement to do repair work on a residential trailer and was given a down payment of $8,000. At no time did he start the work or return the down payment to the victim. Brick was being held at the Gowanda Correctional Facility on an unrelated charge, was transported to the Chenango County Court for his arraignment. He was then transported back to that state prison. Brick’s next court date in Chenango County is pending.

Governor Cuomo announced the submission of 154 vetoes, which includes 13 reappropriations for items that had previously been fully paid out. 75 items are more than seven years old and no state funding has been disbursed over that time, 58 appropriations pertained to functions already funded, 8 appropriations were vetoed on constitutional grounds such as that the purpose of the reappropriation was changed.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman today issued a consumer alert about scammers utilizing gift cards to commit fraud against consumers, and in particular senior citizens, following an uptick of complaints received by the office. The Attorney General also announced that his office would partner with the Retail Council of New York State and AARP to adopt measures to protect customers from and educate them about common scams that utilize gift cards. In addition, the office is meeting with retailers, credit card companies and banks to institute additional measures to protect consumers from these scams.

The statewide unemployment rate decreased from 4.4% to 4.3% in March, according to preliminary figures released today by the New York State Department of Labor. This represents New York State’s lowest unemployment rate since February 2007.

New York State will invest more in mental health & behavioral health services for children across the estate. Governor Cuomo announced that 6.5 Million Dollars would be distributed to 17 health centers to expand services under the “Healthy Steps” program, which focuses on early life doctor visits & family screening. The funds will go directly to federal qualified health centrs, hospital based clinics, private practices & community health centers for the hiring of specialists to identify behavioral or developmental health concerns, such as maternal depression, developmental delays, and childhood trauma.

On Tuesday, April 25th at 1:30 pm, the State Police will be gathering at the Middletown Town Hall to honor Trooper David Brinkerhoff on the 10-year anniversary of his line-of-duty death in a shout out with Travis Trim in a house in Margaretville. Directly following the service the gathering will proceed to State Route 30 to place wreaths at the NYS DOT signs honoring him. All are welcomed to attend.

Governor Cuomo today announced $112.2 million in funding has been awarded to 81 projects that support bicycle and pedestrian enhancements across the state. The funding will provide up to 80% of the cost of each project & it is made available through the Federal Highway Administration and administered by the State DOT.

Due to Wednesday’s postponement, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies have rescheduled their Prevention Night for Monday, May 1. No alcohol will be served during the Rumble Ponies’ game that evening, the team has joined the Broome Opioid Abuse Council to present the event. Tickets for yesterday’s game will be honored on May 1st when the Rumble Ponies will host the Akron RubberDucks at 6:35 PM.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Department responded to 30 Classic Street in Sherburne to investigate complaints of methamphetamine being manufactured at the residence. Officers arrested Andrew Palmer they located several “one pots” & State Police teams responded to conduct a search and cleanup of the area. Methamphetamine & ingredients were recovered, Palmer was charged with Unlawful Manufacturing Methamphetamine, Unlawful Disposal of Methamphetamine Laboratory Equipment, and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. He was arraigned & was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $15,000 cash bail.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded Sunday t a 1 car MVA on Pines Brook Road, in the Town of Walton. Deputies arrested 22 year old Fawn Palladino of Walton, for Aggravated DWI; driving with a BAC of .18% or more, along with several other Vehicle and Traffic violations. Palladino failed to maintain control of her vehicle while turning onto Pines Brook Road; Deputies also arrested 27-year-old Amanda Dente of Walton, for Obstructing Governmental Administration, after she became physically violent with individuals on scene. Both were processed and released with appearance tickets made returnable to the Town of Walton Court at a later date.

Standard & Poor Global ratings has raised the City of Oneonta’s Long Term rating to AA-, on the city’s general obligation debt. The ratings review was issued in anticipation of the city’s issuance of 4.2 Million Dollars in general obligation bonds next month. The improved rating will mean lower long-term interest rates & lower costs to taxpayers over the life of the bonds.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to Bell Hill Road in the Town of Delhi Monday, for a personal injury Motor vehicle accident. 18 year old Camron Cotto of Ithaca, lost control of his vehicle on a curve causing the vehicle to leave the road and strike a number of trees. Cotto was treated and released from O’Connor Hospital. 24-year-old Jesse-Lee Demarco of Watertown sustained serious head trauma and was airlifted to Albany Medical Center, 20-year-old Alex Brimmer of Dexter sustained serious chest and head trauma and was airlifted to Bassett Hospital. 2 other passengers were not injured. The investigation is continuing, charges may be filed.

A State of Pennsylvania resident was arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office on a Fugitive from Justice Warrant stemming from two warrants from Pennsylvania. Michael Perry had been released from the Chenango County Correctional Facility on unrelated charges then turn over to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Department on the active warrant. Perry was arraigned in the Town of Norwich Court and remanded back to the Jail, Perry is to reappear in the Chenango County Court at a later date to answer to his charges.
