Delaware County District Attorney’s office announced that 36 year old Thomas Wright, Jr., 31 year old Antonio Escobar-Boria and 28 year old Alexa Tefft, all of Sidney were indicted by the Delaware County Grand Jury last week on an 8 Count indictment. Wright is charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance for allegedly possessing methamphetamine with the intent to sell, at 62 East Main Street in the Village of Sidney on September 14th 2022. All 3 defendants were accused of Reckless Endangerment and Endangering the Welfare of a Child, for allegedly permitting a 2-year-old child to be in close proximity to the drugs located at 62 East Main Street.

The Village of Sidney is continuing with their Water Improvement project, Village Mayor Andy Matviak said that the installation of Water Meters will begin shortly:

Matviak said that currently crews are working on running new lines under the Susquehanna River into the village to bring water from a new water source into the village, as the village is looking to remove the long standing Manganese problem out of the water supply.

Therapeutic and support services available through New York’s Early Intervention Program for infants and toddlers with disabilities, has been ineffective as many young children did not receive services or faced delays in care. The Audit found that 51% did not receive all types of the therapeutic services to which they were entitled, About 28% did not receive authorized services within 30 days. and 3% did not receive any of their authorized therapeutic services.

Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 31 year old Michael Kimball for Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle, plus many other charges, following a stolen vehicle pursuit in the Town of Dickinson Sunday. Deputies joined a pursuit of an SUV initiated by Binghamton Police, Kimball failed to stop and led police on a pursuit on Chenango Street, Kimball collided with a pickup truck that was blocking the road, which was placed there by Robert Parks of Binghamton, who was the owner of the stolen SUV. After the collision, Parks got into a scuffle with Kimball through the driver’s side window, Kimball reversed, dragging Parks along the pavement and colliding a second time with the Park’s truck, Kimball fled again, Deputies took him into custody a short time later. Kimball was issued 3 appearance tickets and 19 traffic tickets before being transported to Binghamton Police to face separate charges, he faces action in the Town of Dickinson Court at a later date.

Hancock Fire Department responded early Monday morning to 57 East Main Street for a structure fire, occupants escaped, but 2 firefighters received minor injuries & were treated at the scene. Hancock received mutual aid from Deposit, East Branch Fire, and Northern Wayne Fire departments. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Fresh off of the 1st anniversary of the new Emergency Room & Walk In Center at Chenango Memorial Hospital, came word that the Hospital would get 20 Million Dollars for future projects that had been planning, according to Melissa Stagnaro, who is the Executive Director of the Chenango Memorial Hospital Foundation:

Stagnaro said that they will not have to kick off another fundraising campaign for the 2nd Phase of their projects, with the receiving of this Grant money at this time. Phase 2 is expected to take about 5 years to complete.

Occupants escaped without injuries, Fire fighters from Sidney, Afton, Masonville, Unadilla, Guilford, & Mt Upton also responded, Bainbridge Fire Fighters have returned for rekindles yesterday & again this morning, the fire is believed to have started in a garage and spread to the nearby residence.

The Department of Agriculture and Markets has been awarded over $3.8 million from the USDA Food and Nutrition Service to help New York seniors better access locally grown food. Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 46 year old Sallie Cherry of Texas following an investigation in the Town of Hartwick on February 19th. Cherry was charged with Criminal Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Certain Ammunition Feeding Devices, Cherry was released on an Appearance Ticket returnable to the Hartwick Town Court at a later date.

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced that the Greater Binghamton Airport will receive $7 million for renovations of the passenger terminal and the associated vehicle approach, with upgrades to the passenger hold room, & the replacement of the airport’s outdated Air Conditioning equipment, & for the installation of 2 passenger-boarding bridges. The funding comes from the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Law. The Albany, Buffalo and Syracuse airports also received funding.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 43 year old Hayes Cutting Jr of Bainbridge, for 2nd degree assault, Tampering with Physical Evidence, unlawfully fleeing a police officer and resisting arrest, following the investigation into the assault of Norwich Police Officer with a motor vehicle on Monday in Norwich, while attempting to take Cutting into custody on an active warrant. State Police responded to the Town of Oneonta after a tip that Cutting was there, Cutting was found hiding in the ceiling of a building, he was held at the Chenango County Correctional Facility on a State Parole Warrant and will appear in the Town of Norwich Court for the new charges. The passenger in Cutting’s vehicle, Jesse Dann, had an unrelated warrant out for his arrest and was taken into custody.

The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force, and local Police agencies, arrested 32 year old Cody Dickson of the Town of Maine man on 17 charges. The Task Force executed a search warrant at 383 Kolb Road, they seized over $10,000 in methamphetamine, plus weapons, high capacity magazines and ammunition. Dickson was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Criminal Possession of a Weapon, plus Criminal Possession of Stolen Property & Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia, Dickson faces court action shortly.

Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchack announced that 26-year-old Kout Akol of Binghamton was sentenced for Manslaughter, Criminal Possession of a weapon, tampering with physical evidence, and endangering the welfare of a child, in Broome County Court, for the fatal stabbing of 27-year-old Takecia Mitchell in Binghamton, Akol was sentenced to 25 years in state prison, followed by 5 years of post-release Supervision.

Walton Fire Department responded Sunday afternoon to a structure fire at 3664 East Brook Road. Firefighters found that the garage was fully engulfed, and had spread to a nearby house mutual aid was requested from Delhi, Franklin, and Treadwell firefighters, The occupants escaped, 1 cat died from the blaze. Walton Firefighters returned Monday morning to extinguish hot spots. The house and garage were a total loss. A pellet stove is believed to have started the fire, which has been ruled as accidental.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested 36 year old Devon Trew of Endicott, for allegedly smuggling contraband into the Correctional Facility. As investigators began to initiate Contraband Protocol, Trew attempted to flush a package of contraband down the toilet of his cell. Officers recovered the container and further investigation revealed multiple packages containing various narcotics and contraband, including suboxone strips a few strips contained Methamphetamine, Investigators also confiscated 2 packages of marijuana and synthetic cannabis, 1 package of tobacco & matches, Trew was charged with Criminal Possession Controlled Substance, Promoting Prison Contraband & Tampering with Evidence. Trew has been arrested on contraband-related charges at the Broome County Sheriff’s Correctional Facility previously in 2018. Trew was currently serving time on a Petty Larceny charge.

The State Department of Labor announced the adoption of the final farm labor overtime regulations, the phased-in, gradual reduction in the overtime pay threshold will begin on January 1, 2024, with the threshold set at 56 hours. The process will continue with the overtime threshold limit reducing by 4 hours every other year until reaching 40 hours in 2032. Governor Kathy Hochul appeared in Johnson City this morning, she outlined some of the executive Budget Proposal Items that are aimed at helping the Southern Tier:

Governor Hochul discussed $1.4 billion in School Aid for the Southern Tier, Over $151 million in DOT capital projects, $50 million for Binghamton University to continue establishing a hub for battery technology innovation, Over $23 million for local paving and pothole repairs, $963,000 for Broome Community College, $16 million for addiction services funding, the 227 Billion Dollar Budget proposal is being negotiated & is due on April 1st.

The New York State Department of Health today issued the results of its latest annual chronic disease public opinion survey. According to the survey, 88% think heroin use is a serious public health problem, 90% site the use or misuse of prescription opioids, 92% said childhood obesity, 85% think tobacco use continues to be a major problem, 80% reported issues with health care access, 77% said alcohol consumption & 46% think marijuana are other serious health problems.

Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar announced that they will be offering a $5,000 sign-on bonus for all new Corrections Officers hired as lateral transfers. Sheriff Akshar stated that they were down by about 40 full time positions in the Corrections Department, Eligibility for this bonus is open to certified Corrections Officers currently employed at local correctional facilities across New York State. Under the new incentive, qualified lateral transfers will receive an extra $2,500 in their first paycheck with the Broome County Sheriff’s Correctional Facility, plus other incentives, The incentive was approved by the Broome County Legislature on February 16th.

Broome County DA Michael Korchak announced that 45 year old Alan Holmes of Binghamton pleaded guilty to felony Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. In June of 2021, Holmes was arrested following a Traffic Stop in Johnson City, he was a passenger in the vehicle & was found to be in possession of a large quantity of fentanyl, plus he was out on parole for a 2019 narcotics conviction. Holmes will be sentenced to 5 years in New York State prison on May 17th.

The Norwich City Police Department is investigating an assault on 1 of their officer on Monday at 8:47 p.m. at the Stewart’s Shop on State Route 23 in the Town of Norwich. The suspect driver is a White Male wearing a baseball cap, with a black Puma Hoody, dark pants and was seen driving a white Chevy sedan with out of state plates, traveling east on Route 23 toward South New Berlin. State Police responded Friday evening to a reported fatal car versus pedestrian accident on State Route 7 in the Town of Colesville. The investigation revealed that a pickup truck was traveling westbound on State Route 7 when the driver was unable to avoid the pedestrian, who has been identified at 47 year old Angela Kelley of Binghamton. The investigation revealed that Kelley was walking in the westbound lane while dressed in dark clothing and the operator of the pickup was unable to avoid Kelley in the roadway.

48-year-old Jeremy Griffin of Endicott pleaded guilty to felony Assault in Broome County Court. In August, Griffin repeatedly punched a 32-year-old woman in the face, fracturing her jaw, during a domestic dispute at an apartment on East Main Street in Endicott. He was also in violation of a court order of protection prohibiting him from contact with the woman. Griffin has a prior felony conviction for burglary in 1993. He will be sentenced to 4 years in New York State prison on May 16.

The New York State Police today announced that Troopers issued more than 11,800 tickets during a special STOP DWI traffic enforcement period over Super Bowl Weekend. During the campaign which started on Friday, February 10th through Monday February 13th. Troopers arrested 183 people for DWI and investigated 490 crashes, which resulted in 73 people being injured and four fatalities.

Local sales tax collections in New York state increased by 9.2% in January compared to the same month in 2022, according to State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Every county experienced some year-over-year growth in January collections, with Delaware County seeing the largest increase at 26%, followed by Schenectady and Cayuga counties.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 61 year old Michael McBride of Oneonta following a domestic dispute in the Town of Oneonta on February 13th. McBride was charged with Criminal Contempt & Harassment, he is accused of violating an order of protection during the course of a domestic dispute by subjecting the victim to unwanted physical contact, he was being held pending future court action.

A Group of Sidney residents & businesses are teaming up for a fundraiser Saturday at 6:30 at Keith Clark Park for the family of Anielle “AK” McEwan-Lomnicki, who was severely injured when she was hit by a vehicle while walking home from school Wednesday afternoon. Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 51 year old Donna Dalton of Davenport for driving with a suspended registration. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 38 year-old Danielle Pitre of Staten Island, for driving with a suspended registration. Deputies were patrolling Sunday on State Highway 30 in the Town of Colchester, they conducted a traffic stop, Pitre was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended/Revoked Registration, Failure to turn in License Plate to DMV, Failure to Notify DMV of Address Change, and several other lesser charges, she was released on the traffic tickets and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Colchester Court at a later date to answer the charge.

Delaware County District Attorney’s office announced that 40 year old Denise Wells of Herkimer was convicted of 1 count of Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, in the Town of Delhi Court Wednesday. Wells was charged after driving erratically through Delhi on December 12th of last year, she eventually drove off the road on State Highway 10, she was under the influence of heroin. Wells was sentenced to a 1-year conditional discharge, she was also ordered to undergo a drug and alcohol evaluation, attend and complete an Impaired Driver Program, and attend a Victim Impact Panel, her license was revoked for 6 months, and she was ordered to pay $900 in fines & fees.

Gillibrand said that the last Farm Bill came in 2018 before the pandemic, which has added or changed many of the provisions from previous Farm bills out of necessity due to new problems that the pandemic created or expanded.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a physical injury domestic dispute in the Town of Union. 66 year old Brian Sanks of the Town of Union, had attempted to smother his Girlfriend in her sleep, threatened to shoot her with a pistol, and threatened to use a taser baton on her. Sanks was taken into custody by deputies and an Extreme Risk Protection Order was subsequently issued, several weapons & drug paraphernalia were removed from Sanks residence. Sanks was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation, he was arraigned and has remained in custody of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office.
