The House of Representatives passed the Tick-borne Disease Research Transparency and Accountability Act of 2014, Tuesday, a bill authored by Congressman Chris Gibson. The bill forms an interagency working group consisting of federal agencies and non-federal partners, including experienced Lyme physicians and patient advocates who are tasked with ensuring coordination among federal agencies to maximize research priorities. The CDC estimated that 300,000 Americans are diagnosed with Lyme disease each year.

State Police in Oneonta arrested 34-year-old Boris Bura of Roslyn, for Driving While Intoxicated with a reportable BAC result of 0.17%, more than twice the legal limit. The arrest followed the report of a vehicle driving left of the pavement markers on Chestnut Street in Oneonta; Bura was issued tickets returnable to the City of Oneonta Court on September 15th.

State officials urge residents to re-register with the state, for the basic STAR exemption, to avoid an increase in their tax bills. Residents who missed the December 31st 2013 deadline to re-register can still get a check from the state if they do so by December 31st of this year. Registration is available at tax.ny.gov. Checks will be issued in November for STAR recipients in school districts that remained under the property tax cap

SUNY Oneonta and SUNY Delhi are among the top 100 colleges in the Northeast, according to the U.S. News and World Report’s 2015 ranking of “Best Colleges.” The State University College at Oneonta jumped 25 spots to No. 41 in the “Best Regional Universities – North” Category. Among public universities in the Northeast, SUNY Oneonta was ranked No. 9. The State University College of Technology at Delhi was ranked No. 33 on the same list

State Police arrested23 year old Garrett Carmody of Oneonta was charged with 2nd degree burglary of a dwelling and unlawful possession of marijuana last month at a Davenport home. State police also arrested 29-year-old Steve Karg of Grand Gorge for allegedly burglarizing a town of Roxbury home, he was charged with 2nd degree menacing with a weapon and burglary using a dangerous instrument.

Officials in Oneonta announced a plan for vacant properties in the city, instead of letting them fall into disrepair. Oneonta Mayor Dick Miller has a plan to buy vacant homes foreclosed on by Otsego County. He would then sell them to people who would renovate the building for its best use. Oneonta has already purchased two homes in the area, they will sell them to the best bidder, not the highest. The plan is modeled off of one currently being used in Norwich.

Chenango County will offer the Civil Service exam for Public Safety Dispatcher on October 25th. Applications for the exam are being accepted through September 19 at the Chenango County Personnel Office. This test will be used to fill any openings in the Sheriff’s Office Communications/911 Center for both full and part-time positions.
