A trial date has been set for 60 year old Almond Upton of Florida. Upton is accused of purposely running down State Trooper Christopher Skinner, while he was conducting a traffic stop on I-81, on May 29, 2014, killing Trooper Skinner instantly. Upton’s is charged with 1st degree Murder, his trial is scheduled to begin November 10th in Broome County Court.

Oneonta police arrested of 2 area homeless men for a recent fire of an abandoned house. 24-year-old Jon Speller & 23 year old Joseph Morelli were charged with 4th degree arson for the April 27th fire at a house on New Island. Both were arraigned and were remanded to the Otsego County jail on $5000 cash bail pending future court action.

State Police & Emergency responders responded to a train derailment in Marathon this morning. The derailment occurred on West Main Street in Marathon, several cars tipped over at about 7:00 AM today, cranes have been removing the wreckage, and state police reported that no chemicals were spilled, haz-mat teams were not requested, and no injuries were reported.

Fire Fighters from several area companies responded to a structure fire at 5200 State Highway 8 in New Berlin. The fire was reported at about 2:00 AM this morning, fire companies from New berlin, South New Berlin, Sherburne & North Norwich have responded, initial reports suggested that the occupants & pets all escaped without injuries. The investigation is ongoing.

The Tri Town News announced the death of long time Publisher Ken Paden. Paden passed away Monday, he had announced the selling of the tri town news & his other regional weekly newspapers on may 21st, to the River Valley News Group. Paden was with the Tri Town News since the mid-70’s.

Former Masonville Town Supervisor & Sidney business man Jack Thomas died Tuesday at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. Thomas served as the Masonville Town Supervisor & on the Delaware County Board of Supervisors for many years; he also opened Sidney Auto Body in 1960. Thomas was 84; funeral arrangements are being handled by C. H. Landers funeral home in Sidney.

Employees at the Chenango County Office building were evacuated for a brief period today, after an extension cord overheated in an office, and led to smoke throughout the building. Norwich Fire chief Tracy Chawgo told WCDO News that no one was injured, the situation was stopped quickly, the building was aired out, and all office are expected to be opened normal hours Friday.

A Garfield New Jersey resident was arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for DWI. Deputies arrested 39-year-old Krzysztof Majewski for DWI following a traffic stop on County Rd 39 in the Town of Afton. Majewski is accused of operating the vehicle while intoxicated. Majewski was arraigned in the Town of Afton Court and held on $1,000 cash bail.
