The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force arrested 30-year-old Rhamel Matthews, of Vestal, Wednesday following the execution of a search warrant of Matthews’s car & residence. Police confiscated more than 100 grams of heroin, more than 1,100 wax envelopes of heroin packaged for sale, marijuana plants, a pistol and more than $4,000 in cash. Matthews was charged with 2 counts of 3rd degree Criminal possession of a controlled substance, 2 counts of Criminal possession of a weapon, plus 2nd degree Criminal use of drug paraphernalia, & 3 counts of Unlawfully growing cannabis, he faces arraignment shortly

Sidney village police arrested 31 year old Brett Romano of Otego on a variety of charges, including felony DWI, Aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, refusing to submit to a breathalyzer test and driving with switched license plates. Romano was remanded to the Delaware county jail on $1000 cash bail or $2000 bond pending future court action.

Sidney village police arrested 23-year-old Jessica Reynolds of Sidney for criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal possession of a hypodermic instrument and a probation violation. Reynolds was remanded to the Delaware county jail without bail pending future court action.

Former Binghamton director of Parks and Recreation, John Whalen, was arraigned Thursday morning for felony 2nd degree grand larceny. City police accuse Whalen of stealing more than $50,000 from the city between 2008 and last year. Whalen pleaded innocent during arraignment this morning, he was released and faces court action at a later date.

New York State Police issued a warning to regarding a telephone scam. Residents of Delaware and Chenango Counties have been receiving calls soliciting funds for either new uniforms for the troopers or for officers killed or injured in the line of duty. The New York State Police does not solicit funds; they receive funding from the state budget and from federal grants. Citizens are reminded to be cautious about telephone solicitations of any kind and to never give out personal information to unsolicited callers.

Governor Cuomo today announced that more than 360 electric vehicle and plug-in hybrid charging stations will be installed across the state in support of his Charge NY initiative. The initiative is expected to create a statewide network of up to 3,000 public and workplace charging stations over the next 5 years and to put up to 40,000 plug-in vehicles on the road during that period. The new York Power Authority issued a Request for Proposals for the installation of 100 electric vehicle charging stations equipped at 36 locations, they are expected to be in operation by 2014.
