P.M. NEWS MONDAY 7-6-15

1 man was killed & 2 others were injured in an incident early Sunday morning. Police said 21-year-old Seth Swindler of Conklin was killed while riding a mattress towed by a truck. Swindler was pronounced dead at the scene after a truck exited the field & struck the mattress. 2 unidentified 17-year-olds who were also on the mattress were injured. The incident occurred in a field off Route 267 in Choconut Township, Pennsylvania, just south of the New York state line. The investigation is continuing.

Broome County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 20-year-old Mark Mackey of Windsor, for 3rd-degree burglary and 3rd-degree grand larceny. Mackey is accused of stealing a motorcycle; he was arraigned in Dickinson Town Court and sent to the Broome County jail.

State Senators Jim Seward & John Bonacic announced $40,000 in state grant funding for the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, The monies will be used for the purchase of a new police vehicle built specifically for use by the office’s K-9 drug and search rescue team. The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office is home to K-9 Officer Ozzie and his human partner, Sergeant John Demeo. Ozzie is trained in drug detection and patrol duties and has played an instrumental role in assisting officers in contending with the office’s escalating number of drug cases.

Governor Cuomo announced today the growth of solar in New York State has increased more than 300% from 2011 to 2014, twice the rate of U.S. solar growth overall. A total of 314.48 megawatts of solar electric was installed as of December 2014 across the state, equivalent to powering more than 51,000 homes. In the Southern Tier, the percentage increase of megawatts of solar capacity was 486% and projects installed in the Southern Tier from 2011 to 2014 increased 144%, more information is available at nyserda.ny.gov/solarcapacity.
