The Norwich Fire Department responded to 34 Silver Street for a reported structure fire at about 11:00 last night, crews arrived and found a well involved kitchen fire and quickly knocked the fire down, Norwich units were in service within an hour, no injuries were reported.

New York insurance companies are seeking to raise premiums 13% next year. The proposed rates from roughly 40 insurers to the state Department of Financial Services come in the 2nd year of the state’s health exchange. Excellus Health Plan proposed a 19.7% increase; Empire Blue Cross is seeking a rate increase of 18% & MVP Health Care wants a 19% increase. The state Department of Financial Services said the proposals are subject to review by the agency.

Governor Cuomo said $3.4 million in federal funding would help make roads in Chenango County safer. The funding will go toward a state DOT project to improve safety along Route 8 in the towns of Norwich, New Berlin and Columbus. The improvements will include flattening curves, widening shoulders and improving sight distance. High-friction surface treatments will also be installed on downgrades. The project is part of a $75.6 million in federal Highway Safety Improvement Program funding, which will be used to complete 33 road safety projects across New York.

Binghamton area Motorists are advised today that Front Street between Bevier Street and the Interstate 81 northbound on and off ramps will experience short term alternating lane closures for traffic signal detection work beginning at 7 AM. Flag personnel will be on site to guide motorists through the work zone. This work is expected to be completed by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, weather permitting.
