State Police in Margaretville responded to an attempted robbery and shooting in the parking lot of the Hess Mart on State Route 28 in the Village of Margaretville today. The investigation led to one male suspect and two female suspects being taken into custody at the Budget 19 Motel located in Kingston, 3 suspects were questioned this afternoon, The investigation is ongoing.

The State University of New York approved the 5th consecutive year of tution increases under its five year plan to raise rates $300 a year and proposed a 17.5% state aid increase next fiscal year. The tuition increase will bring in state tuition to $6,470 a year. The budget increase is a request to the state Legislature and Gov. Cuomo for the fiscal year that starts April 1st. In 2011, Gov Cuomo and the state Legislature agreed to the SUNY 2020 program which allows the 64 college system to increase tuition $300 a year over five years. The move gives SUNY the independence to increase tuition without having to battle the Legislature every year over its request

Governor Cuomo said reforming the state’s education system will be a major focus of his 2nd term. The governor said schools need a strong teacher evaluation system. Cuomo also supports more charter schools in New York. He will offer more details about his agenda in his state of the state address on January 7th and his state budget proposal later that month for the new fiscal year that begins April 1st

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is looking to expand broadband access for people who live and do business in Delaware County. Gillibrand visited yesterday to discuss ways to expand and improve high-speed broadband access within the county. Representatives from the Telecom industry, government agencies and local business owners were on hand to learn how they would benefit from the change. Gillibrand said the next step is to work with state government and the U.S. Department of Agriculture and apply for grants and loans to acquire the necessary funding to put the infrastructure to work

The Weather Channel ranked Delaware County the 10th worst place in the nation to own a home. The rankings are based on weather, climate and natural risks and disaster. The recent article pointed to the 2006 flood, which devastated the county with up to 15 inches of rain in three days. Officials say the study doesn’t take into account the work that’s been done in recent years to minimize future damage, such as reclaiming flood plains and stream bank restoration. Another factor contributing to the ranking was the high cost of energy. Of the 50 locations on the list, the boroughs of Alaska were the only ones higher than Delaware County’s costs for home heating and cooling
